 ‘Longworth in 1945’ Exhibition 2025

On 12 and 13 September the Village Hall hosted ‘Longworth in 1945’  -- a community-led exhibition. It marked the 80th anniversary of the ending of World War II, and looked at how the village coped with six years of war.  It explored the lives of the 90 evacuees billeted in Longworth and how the local school coped, the formation of the local Home Guard and Royal Observer Corps, as well as how the blackout and rationing affected residents.  The Hall even had its own ‘Wall of Poppies’.

A central part of the exhibition was the collection of wartime stories written by local residents, past and present, that illustrated their families’ very different experiences. There were the memories of a father who spent six years away from his family while on Arctic convoy duty, the nurse working in London during the Blitz, the daughter of a Jewish family narrowly escaping from a Nazi round-up, and the captain of a motor torpedo boat who crossed the Channel more than 20 times under heavy bombing during the Dunkirk evacuation.

Yvonne Longstaff and Valery Rose are very grateful to the Village Hall Committee for their help in putting on this community event.

Update: the village fete was a great success, and the total raised this year was over £7,000.

APRIL FOOL’S QUIZ, 2023

A big thank you to everyone who supported the African Children’s Fund’s April Fool’s Day Quiz Night and Supper. It raised a brilliant £1,251, which will keep 77 street children in Kenya at school for a whole year, so they gain an education rather than scavenging or begging on the streets. Congratulations to the winning team, The Mixed Bag, who were worthy winners with 93 points out of a possible 120.Thank you to everyone who took part and a special thank you to everyone who helped out. Dee Tyrer

The Bach Street Boys visited Longworth to give a concert in St Mary's Church, on Thursday the 5th January, 2023, to celebrate Twelfth Night. It was a great success with over 80 people attending, and much fun was had by all with a varied, sometimes amusing, sometimes serious programme. the fun continued in the Blue Boar afterwards, where Anthony had kindly agreed to put on free snacks for all in the pub. Many thanks to all who helped organise this event!

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 1926 - 2022

It is with great sadness that we received the news from Buckingham Palace of the death of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, on 8th September 2022. On behalf of the people of the parish of Longworth, the Parish Council would like to offer their sincere condolences to the King and all members of the royal family.  Her Majesty’s lifelong dedication to this country was an inspiration to many and for which we are thankful.

The union flag at  St Mary’s Church Longworth will be at half mast until the day after her funeral.

An online book of condolence has been set up by Buckingham Palace which can be found at https://www.royal.uk/. For those wishing to show their respects in other ways in Longworth there is now a Book of Condolence in the Church.
